I am Sang

One of Vietnam’s most exciting emerging contemporary artists, Sang Phan has invented an energetic visual language in which paintings come to life in an explosion of color. Using expressive brushwork in bold, thick strokes of vibrant acrylic and oil paint, Sang depicts the multidimensional nature of life in a striking, seemingly spontaneous manner.

Confronting the wheel of human emotion, life and death, Sang’s large-scale paintings explore the dark and light elements of reality, but always with joyful colour and form. Marrying expressionism, cubism and abstraction, his unique style captures the essence of feelings elicited by events, objects and human nature.

“Living things and their presence inspire me, their beauty or ugliness can be imagined through color.”

SANG PHAN’S JOURNEY

Born and raised in Vietnam, Sang’s passion for painting began at an early age. At just seven years old he drew a portrait of himself painting a mountainscape and a child at an easel. It was at this profound moment that Sang knew he wanted to be an artist.

After completing a Bachelor in Fine Art from Hue University College of Arts, Sang continued to hone his craft and is now hotly tipped as one of Vietnam’s artist names to watch.
Sang likes to work with a series of vivid pinks, greens and yellows. The uplifting spirit of these energetic colors are emblematic of Phan’s personality, to always depict the light in spite of the dark and see the positives in life, no matter which way the wind blows..

“My subjects are communicated through color, shape, and form. The movement of my strokes expresses the brightness or darkness of my mood onto the canvas, so the viewer can feel my emotions at that fleeting moment.”

SANG PHAN’S PHILOSOPHY

It’s Sang’s philosophy that all of humanity is united under one sun, and that art should express regional experiences, but align them with other cultural expressions from around the world.

Sang’s mission is to transcend the boundaries of nation-state borders; for his work to speak of people from all over the world’s emotions and values. In gaining international exposure, Sang’s works will indeed celebrate this unifying message.
